This is pretty brief and Moss says she wrote it pretty quickly. I really wasn't sure what to expect as I have never been into romance and I don't think I have ready anything this young. Kate, a middle-aged single mum of one has been quarantining, but her desire to escape to the hills (literally) overcomes her guilt that she should stay at home and she heads out on a walk one afternoon without telling anyone where she is going. Lovely little read that gives much to ponder on. I've read Sarah Sutton's most recent book, Two Kinds of Us which follows Harry and Stella/Destelle. On the whole, she was sweet, and I really enjoyed the grief aspect, but she has personal quirks that felt forced and I thought some of her feelings regarding the incident with her father felt stereotypical and out of the blue. Another cute YA romance from Sarah Sutton. I hope to see more of Addy and Vincent in the next Fenton County installment! It's curious to see how such recent events are embedded in a past which is now being fictionalised – especially as there's the possibility we could return to a state of lockdown and quarantine at any time. Talk about an awkward ice-breaker. It was just that good. I can't wait for this book to come out so others can go read it! She felt real and relatable. As she struggles with her feelings for Vincent and her inability to process losing her dad and her potential part in it, her entire life changes.
I know the feelings you go through - the type of grief that holds. This swoony romance captured my heart completely. This was another bleak yet beautiful read from Moss. Stylistically, I enjoyed the writing which, if not quite stream of consciousness, focuses on the characters' thoughts more than their actions. Exactly how my thoughts rolled at the time. Ultimately: Yes, we've all been in this together, but we're not all experiencing the pressures in the same way. Although he is unexpectedly on-call due to a Covid- related shortage of available volunteers he is happy to be tramping around on fells and tors and enjoys the excuse his volunteer work gives him to wander freely outside even during lockdown. It's a character study really but as with many of Moss's novels, it's closely linked to landscape- in this case, the setting is the Peak District, Nov 2020. Definitely worthwhile. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 "𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐲" (h), hasn't been the same since her father passed away in an accident that occurred in November. I also really love that Sarah decided to brand this book along with her previous three into a series! I liked Addy a lot, with her drive and planning personality. The way some of us were forced to stay home despite home never having been a safe space. The synopsis hinted at a thrilling and tense story but it was a far quieter one than could easily have been delivered. Used to a daily ramble on the nearby fells, Kate grabs her rucksack as the day is waning — convinced she won't meet anyone as the sky starts to drizzle, she doesn't intend to be out long and doesn't even say goodbye to her son — but when Matt realises she's missing and the night turns dark and cold, he's uncertain where to turn for help: Do you call the police when your Mom is breaking the law and risking a huge fine? I found myself judging Kate and her lack of resilience at first, but as the story progressed I had to acknowledge that COVID in the UK (this story is set in the Peak District of England) is/was different from COVID where I live, and chose instead to view this story as a reminder that we all experience hardship in different ways. Overall, a really amazing read! Alice is a widow and recovering from cancer. Instead, it seems stuck in a time warp. Kate's claustrophobia, her reflections on life before and in the now come across powerfully as she attempts to distract herself with household tasks and worthless items but she becomes more and more unsettled and imprisoned. I highly recommend this book for YA romance fans or fans of clean reads! He held her up and even though there were circumstances that kept them apart, they were able to make it.
Once I adjusted to the stream-of-consciousness narrative, I was completely reeled into this relatively short but immersive novel. I cannot wait to know more about Stella. I am beginning to appreciate the meditative style of Sarah Moss more and more.
